Written in 2012 for the Manhattan School of Music Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra under Bobby Sanabria, ¿Quién Sabe? (“Who Knows?”) combines Brazilian baião and samba rhythms with jazz harmony and funk. Alto saxophone solos over the modal baião section, baritone saxophone takes the spotlight in the samba, and the full band drives several climactic passages.
