Concerto
for Tuba and Piano
Composed by Scott Ninmer
"Concerto for Tuba and Piano" portrays the emotional journey of our protagonist, the tuba,
as it progresses from a mirthful innocence through despondency and, ultimately, to anger
and exasperation. This fifteen-minute concerto follows a traditional three-movement
‘fast-slow-fast’ structure in roughly equal parts. As in many of my works, this piece draws upon my knowledge of classical harmony and form,
jazz rhythms and syncopation, and the melodies and spirit of folk and pop music. Hopefully,
this synthesis of genres has come together in a piece that is as enjoyable for the audience to hear
as it was for me to compose.

Negative Space
for Tuba/Euphonium Quartet
Composed by Scott Ninmer
"Negative Space" was commissioned by The American Tuba Quartet. In writing "Negative Space", I sought to meld my classical and jazz/pop influences as one to create a work that would be both fun and challenging to perform and enjoyable to the audience.
The first movement in E-flat major features bouncy and syncopated rhythms in a lively start to the
piece. The second movement is a slow waltz in a melancholic D-flat major. In contrast to the first
movement, the second movement introduces more chromatic harmony set underneath the tuneful
melodies. The third movement in F major brings together motives from the first two movements
along with original material in an energetic scherzo. This movement also features several chorale
interjections as well as a fugato, and brings the piece to a climactic finish.
