for Lyric Soprano and Chamber Orchestra
( 2 , 2 , 2 , 2 - 4 , 2 , 0 , 0 - 2 Perc , Hp - Str )
Composed by Scott Ninmer
In an age where deforestation remains a large environmental and ecological problem throughout the
world, "Sylvan Spirits" was written to bring awareness to this plight by capturing the haunting and
mystical beauty of the woods in several settings. The soprano's text is derived from three famous
poems written in tribute to the woods. Beginning with a light-hearted rendition of Anne Brontë's "Lines Composed in a Wood on a Windy Day", the piece moves into a more somber mood for
Rudyard Kipling's "The Way Through the Woods". Finally, the piece closes on a mysterious note with
Robert Frost's "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening", reflecting the uncertainty of the future of
our world's forests. Alternate versions for baritone with orchestra and narrator with orchestra are available upon request.

for Symphony Orchestra
( 2 , 2 , 2 , 2 - 4 , 2 , 3 , 1 - Timp , 3 Perc , Hp - Str )
Composed by Scott Ninmer
Based on the children's book "The Wind in the Willows" by Kenneth Grahame, the first four sections of the piece ("Spring Cleaning", "The River", "Toad Hall", "Wild Wood")
feature a tale from each individual character and location. Each character is given a theme that is
presented in their corresponding tale. The "Wind in the Willows" motive (first played by the horns
in the opening fanfare) is woven into each of these character's themes, and also recurs independently
in various guises throughout. All four themes ultimately come together in the "The Fight for Toad
Hall", and the piece comes to a close with Toad's glorious victory banquet.
